July 2025: Building Worlds of Colour

It’s one thing to see something through a screen and it’s another to feel it in real life. For instance, seeing the photos of a large mountain is one thing. But looking up at it from its base, feeling its presence looming over you, is completely different.
No image can ever replace the wonder and awe that these moments inspire.
We could call this the grandeur effect, as there is something palpable about the combination of magnitude (size) with beauty (artistry).
In the AV production space, we have been working to capture the essence of that effect and translate it into our show designs. To bring size and artistry together.
Now, we can perhaps never compete with the beauty of nature, but in the past few months, we have incorporated geometric space as a key feature of several large shows.
We created spatial elements that drew the audience in. Elements that made them feel like they were part of a world—a world of light and colour and emotion.
Back in April we wrote about the possibilities we saw for AV Events as we joined the TES group. Namely, the expansion and diversification of resources, letting us push the boat out further, metaphorically speaking.
This impetus towards three-dimensionality is the type of thing we were talking about. It won’t be possible or even practical for every event. But take a look at the several different ways we have done this. Let yourself dream.
April: Northern Easter Camp

Northern Easter Camp.
It’s big. It’s bright. And it’s always a playground of creative opportunity for us.
Other than the increased arsenal of lighting fixtures to draw on this year (thanks to our South Island team), a notable element this year was the projection roof over the stage.

Whilst the physical design is simple, the effect was striking, as it acted as a blank canvas for our lighting tech to play around with.
For one, we placed our movable lighting bars as a border around it, allowing him to make lighting chases. But it was also the perfect place to shine gobos, lazers, and other movers to create a variety of looks.
May: The Commercial Project Awards

The 2025 Master Builders Commercial Project Awards were particularly special for us this year. You may have heard us talk about it elsewhere, but we broke new ground with this setup.
We created an LED roof.

Well… we really created five LED columns that ran the length of the room, giving a partial roof.
However, you want to define it, what we can say for certain is that people looked up and saw stars tracing across the sky; and graphics zooming up and down at the celebration of an award; and the glow of each category bathing the room in its colour.
Again, the graphics were relatively simple. But the effect was undeniably striking.
A longstanding client of ours, we were proud to be able to design a show for Master Builders that matched the prestige of their commercial awards and all the work that they do in the building industry.
June: Our New LED Video Bars
Back in early June, we got a new lighting fixture which has proven to be a whole lot of fun. They are our “LED Video Bars.”
As the latter name suggests, they are LED pixel bars that are video-mappable. Meaning that they can either be a standalone lighting fixture, or they can be integrated with the show’s video graphics, creating a seamless blend between the LED screen and the rest of the room.
We see endless possibilities in marrying lighting with vision. But a notable one is, again, the creation of three-dimensionality.
Imagine graphics that zoom upwards from the screen and continue out onto the roof, travelling backwards above your head in a flash of movement. We did this for one setup in Shed 10 in Auckland, and it, was, magical.

This is a similar effect as having an LED roof, but at a much lower cost. Though the trade off is that it is obviously more limited in what it can do.
Regardless, with the large quanity of bars that we have (220 metres in total), in both the North and South islands, we think that this will be a beautiful edition to event designs. It offers immense potential for the future of your shows.
Create Worlds, Not Images
Hear us again when we say that it is neither possible nor practical to create these types of three-dimensional designs for every event. But keep it in the back of your minds next time you are planning one.

It doesn’t have to be intricate. Chances are you already doing this sort of thing with your decorations: billboards, flowers, props, etc. You already know how to create stories.
We are just saying that there is much more room to imagine and create when this involves audio-visual elements. They offer you a dynamism that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
They create an experience, rather than a picture.
If this idea strikes you or excites you, get in touch with us. We would love to help you explore how your events could incorporate spatial elements.
After all, we want to help you create unforgettable events.
